Business Spotlight: Gwinnett Carpet

Each week we feature a business from our hometown of Lilburn. This week, learn more about Gwinnett Carpet.

Fernan Peralta came to America because he wanted to give his children a chance to go to college and to succeed in life. Peralta, a chemical engineer by trade, took over ownership of the carpet business in 1987. For the past 25 years, Fernan and his employees have been selling and installing flooring options including carpet, hardwoods, tile, laminants as well as having options for residential and commercial spaces. I recently sat down with Fernan to talk about his business.

Patch: What is the best aspect of owning Gwinnett Carpet?

Fernan: Well, really being your own business is a challenge and I have always liked a challenge. Also I enjoy giving back to the community with service.

Patch: What is the most challenging aspect of owning a flooring business?

Fernan: You work 80, 90, 100 hours each week for free. The economy varies and sometimes you have good years and sometimes you have bad years. Being a small business it is very hard to compete with the Home Depots and the Lowe's but when I look back I think that the work is worth it.

Patch: What makes your business unique?

Fernan: We try to do the best we can to give every one of our customers excellent service and to leave them satisfied. We also try to install immediately. We can usually get a customer's materials filled within two days and then start installing after that. Our installers are very polite and very conscious of the homeowner's property so we minimize any damage that may happen. The fast response has made us extremely unique.

Patch: What makes the Lilburn community special?

Fernan: Lilburn is unique because you have a section of new growth in the city as well as an area that is more mature. So this mixture has been very good for us. As far as the community we like to participate in events around Lilburn so that we give and receive good will from the people who live here. This is a very nice community.
