1. Summer Begins! Summer officially begins today with the annual Summer Solstice at 1:16 p.m. The longest day of the year may also be the hottest day of the year so far, with a forecast of 97 degrees, according to WeaterBug.com, which supplies the weather info on Lilburn Patch. We get a break, however. When 1:16 hits it will only be 91 to 93 degrees.
2. Cop Talk: Look for Lilburn Patch’s report on Wednesday from tonight’s Gwinnett Police meeting with Hanarry Estates homeowners to discuss the recent rash of burglaries in the River Drive/Killian Hill Road area. One thing certain to be stressed at this meeting: lock your cars. Many car burglaries can be avoided if the doors are locked. The meeting is scheduled at 7 p.m. at the Hanarry Swim and Racquet clubhouse.
3. Heads in the Cloud: The monthly Lilburn Business Association’s luncheon (11:30 a.m. at Killian Hall) will feature a talk with Will Nobles on “How Cloud Computing Can Help Your Business.” Cost is $12 for members, $15 for non-members. It’s a great chance to mingle with area business people and learn some valuable tech skills.
4. Betcha Didn’t Know This: It’s Go Skateboarding Day today — all across the globe, apparently. Mountain Park Park is the place to go locally (though there’s no organized event scheduled). If you start early you might be able to skate all the way to Kennesaw in Cobb County, which plans has a list of events from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., including competitions, food and slacker gear.
5. Why Didn’t It Work Out? Remember that 1980s sitcom Family Ties? You know, the one with Alex and Mallory and the other girl? (By the way, just how many shows had “Family” in the title during that decade anyway?) Well, here’s a bit of Summer Solstice trivia: Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross, who played the parents on that show, were both born on this date in 1947. Talk about thorough casting!
