Group Passionate About Helping Victims of Abuse

Ahimsa House provides emergency animal safehouse services.

Last week at the Farmer’s Market you could have easily walked right by and not noticed the photo displays of a handful of the pets currently residing in the Ahimsa House shelter that are in need of loving homes.

You might have also missed the Ahimsa House representatives who were distributing information about their services to some of our local pet owners.

If you weren’t able to stop and say hello, let me assure you that the Ahimsa House volunteers are passionate about helping the animal victims of domestic violence homes and stand ready to help with safety planning and transportation for pets in dangerous home situations.

Ahimsa translated from Sanskrit means “nonviolence.”

It’s reported that almost half of all victims of domestic violence turning to shelters for their own personal safety report that they delayed seeking safety because of concerns about what might happen to their pets.

How sad that so many animals are innocent victims of an abusive situation where they are used as pawns in an environment where control and intimidation can take the form of threats to beloved pets.

Thankfully, in 2004 Ahimsa House became Georgia’s first and only organization dedicated to helping the animal victims of domestic violence and their owners reach a confidential shelter together.

They are prepared to provide shelter for dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, small in-home caged pets such as hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, etc. and can even accommodate horses as the need arises.

If you are in a situation where you and your pet might be in danger, Ahimsa House currently has a 24-hour crisis line (404-452-6248).  This hotline is available to both victims or their representatives and stand ready to assist with all types of animal safety issues.
