Crews from a demolition company and Atlanta Gas were on scene at 1197 Spring Mill Drive Thursday to begin the process that many people have been waiting for at the former meth house.

The site where three young children died in an explosion and fire caused by chemicals used to make methamphetamine will be leveled Wednesday, May 30.

John Krueger, president of Viking Development Group, which has been contracted to raze the house, says the first swipe by heavy equipment will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The fire occurred on Feb. 17, 2011, killing three siblings despite the efforts of Good Samaritans to rescue the children — a 18-month-old girl, 3-year-old boy and 4-year-old boy. Their mother and another man have been charged with felony murder, and police are still seeking a third suspect.

Thursday morning, Krueger, his crew and Atlanta Gas workers were prepping the house by disconnecting all of the utilities, "so that the house is essentially dead to utilities and safe for everyone [once demolition begins]."

Krueger said the demolition of the house will take about two hours and the entire project, including cleanup and re-seeding the lot, will take about two days.

He said he's fully aware of the magnitude of the demolition of the burned-out house will have on the community, which has seen it as an eyesore and a reminder of the tragedy.

"It's sad, given the circumstances," Krueger said, adding that none of trees are expected to be removed. "Nobody wants it here. But after we're done it'll be like it was never here. In two months, it'll be a green field."
