Op-Ed: President's Re-Election Shows Country Wasn't 'Fooled' by Romney

Ilene Johnson, who was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, is elated the country didn't listen to Mitt Romney's "smooth talk," and instead sided with her hope for the future.

Last September I was proud to be a delegate to the Democratic National Convention and re-nominate Barack Obama to be President of the United States. I was elated last night to have witnessed his re-election.

I was concerned over the past week that President Obama would not win, and my husband and I were worried about what kind of future our daughter would have in America; an America without support for public education, access to healthcare and too eager to go to war. I was concerned that the same people who ran the Bush administration and got us into the Iraq fiasco would be calling the shots again. My conservative friends who complain about the ‘welfare state’ are the same ones benefiting from all these programs and would be hard pressed to pay for their parents’ health expenses without Medicare or their children’s schooling without public education.

I am comforted by the fact that the voters of the United States did not fall for Mr. Romney’s smooth talk. And, they did not listen to the lies and trash talk put forth by the extreme right wing of the Republican Party which were ugly and did nothing to help bring this country together to solve problems. We kept hearing the same shrill nonsense that the President is a foreigner/Muslim/communist/socialist/atheist along with everything else that would have been swept under the rug had Mr. Romney done it.

The Romneys do not seem to understand the middle class. Mr. Romney’s comments about the 47 percent were appalling. Anne Romney’s comment “That’s all YOU PEOPLE are going to get” when talking about releasing more of Mr. Romney’s tax returns was insensitive. I have no doubt that Mrs. Romney put in some work raising five boys, but she does not count her pennies at the grocery store like I and my neighbors do. The Romneys' attitude towards their fellow Americans reflects that.

I understand people change their views on issues, but Mr. Romney seemed to change his every week. I felt I could not trust him in the event he would want to send our young people to war. How would we know what the facts were? You cannot fool all of the people all of the time and yesterday the American people showed they were not fooled.

I am proud of our president’s accomplishments. I am pleased we have someone handling foreign affairs with a smart brain and a cool head who speaks softly and carries a big stick. I am pleased we have someone who knows the difference between a hand out and a helping hand up. We have a future now. God bless the United States of America.

Please don't use the name of God in a Democratic Party propaganda piece. Your party has specifically voted to NOT acknowledge the sovereignty and protective hand of God that has ensured America is strong and prosperous. God bless the United States of America indeed, but don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth – that would be hypocritical.

I couldn't agree more! The Democratic Party denied "God" three times - does that tell you something. I wonder how she would feel if it were one of her Son's that got killed in Benghazi!

I find it ironic, that the same people that condemn middle-eastern countries that have an Islamic perspective, are the same ones trying to segregate our country by religion and gender. TALK ABOUT HYPOCRITICAL BEHAVIOR!!

Thanks, "Pittsburgh Paul" for quickly proving why the Republicans can't win. Ignorance.

No Paul, talking out of both sides of your mouth is impossible as your mouth has no side. You and your ilk are part of our country's problem and will be left behind by the solutions the rest of us come up with.

Nice article Ms. Johnson. I too am encouraged by progress true freedom which must include two things: 1) A social safety net made of Kevlar 2)The end of the hoarding of wealth which is tantamount to the hoarding of opportunity.

Quite the contrary, I very much have a voice that is consistent and unapologetic. I just thought it was flippant and humorous that a member of the Democratic Party delegation would attend the DNC, vote to remove any reference from God from the party platform, and then return to her flock to "ask" God to bless the US. If my "ilk" are those that call out the minimizing and trivializing of God's presence in America, then we are all eager to see what solutions our Government can create outside the blessings of God.

Seriously, I appreciate your thoughts and your service but be careful not to celebrate too soon. If the leaders of both these parties don't get their act together and work together very quickly...we're all headed down the tubes and it won't be pretty. Both campaigns talked alot of trash....the majority from what I followed came from the Democratic side very early on. While the President has won...he clearly didn't win with any mandate. Had the Republicans done a better job of courting the latino vote, the women vote and the jewish vote...Mitt would be the next President. It is what it is and we all need to live with the results.

In terms of handouts versus handups...it's a nice play of words but most of the present social programs do nothing but encourage people to stay on the public dole. The now infamous "bama phone" video from Cleveland is fairly indicative of the attitude prevalent in our cities today. While Mitt was quoted many times about the 47 percent...there is alot of truth to it. We have too few people working and trying to carry the load of all the folks who seem to think those that "have" owe something to those that "dont."

Our economy is completely tanked and business people like myself struggle everyday to stay in business and try to create jobs. The single biggest issue we face as a Nation wasn't even addressed...DRUGS. It's everywhere..in schools and business. I can guaranty you we will be going to war...and fairly soon.

Ignorance? I speak the truth of the Democratic Party choosing to remove any reference to God from its platform.
Or ignorance that I believe in the one true and mighty God that will judge us all based on our faith in Jesus?
If the former, then prove my ignorance. If the latter, we'll both find out sooner or later.... although I’d rather not take such a chance in the name of ignorance.

Seriously, Pittsburgh, you are about a half a step away from being as extreme as the Taliban. Take a look at yourself. Every Democrat I know is spiritual, compassionate, well-informed and good thinkers. Nearly all are Christians. If you were better informed, you would know this already, rather than spewing some false hate-radio rhetoric. Are you actually READING the New Testament?

Paul is sadly correct...the DNC removed it from the platform and then voted to reinsert it at the President's direction....over actual boo's when the vote was taken. I believe in this country and I believe that the only solution is if we all work together to get through the next several years. We simply cannot afford all of the programs that are in place....families will have to start taking care of their sick and elderly again...people can work to feed themselves.....just like my family has to. We have so much national debt that it is strangling the economy. You talk about hoarding? What hoarding...do you actually think wealthy people stuff money in their mattresses? It's not being hoarded....it's being used to create more wealth as it should be. All of us have the opportunity to get an education, work hard, work smart to take advantage of opportunities....and...yup....create wealth. Those who chose not to avail themselves of those opportunities should fall by the wayside...There should be a safety net in place for those infirm, children or elderly who cannot provide for themselves. The rest can be trained to work and earn their eats just like the rest of us!

It is a Travesty that the American Public chose to reelect Bin Laden Obama into the highest office of the nation. We will now have a 2nd term under a MUSLIM president, who bows down to the Muslims and ignores the interests of the Americans overseas- hint Libya. The man should be impeached for his blatant disrespect for the Libyan ambassador and the seal team that were murdered. Obama is a socialist, Muslim and he hates wealth, yet he is a very wealthy man. He did not grow up as a poor child in the black areas of the nation. He lead a very comfortable life in Hawaii and Kenya- as his grandparents were wealthy. He was raised under the conditions of share the wealth, but I do not see him sacrificing or giving anything to charity OR sharing his wealth. Socialism is his agenda.
Why do citizens of Canada (socialized medicine) come to the US to get treated? Because they can not get treatment!
There will be even more unemployment in this administration due to increased taxes and Obamacare. Companies will close or chose to move to another country. This country was built on the foundation of God and the Bible- not gay rights and abortion. Our fore fathers are turning in their graves right now at the craziness of our country.
WE just have to pray that the Congress can keep HIS agenda at bay until his 4 years are over. More death and destruction to come on American soil, because Obama is fighting WITH the Muslim agenda to take over the United States.

(hysterical laughter) " Mrs. Romney put in some work raising five boys, but she does not count her pennies at the grocery store like I and my neighbors do. The Romneys' attitude towards their fellow Americans reflects that."

Curious how that translates into the multi-million dollar vacations that Mrs. Obama has taken . . . . please, I'm dying to hear how that is parallel to your life since you "pinch pennies at the grocery store". Good Grief - can a comment get any more irrelevant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ina Minute, If nearly all Democrats are Christian, then why do you deny God before man? Yes, I read the New Testament (and the Old Testament) – and Matthew 10:33 states: “But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.” So as to provide a “neutral” report, here is the ABC News report on the Democratic platform: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/09/democrats-shift-language-on-israel-remove-god-given-from-platform/. The distancing from Israel is also an affront to God, and if you are a Christian, you know that, despite the Jewish nation not turning to Jesus, Israel is still God’s protected people and if you turn your back on Israel, you turn your back on God.

How can you say that every Democrat is spiritual, yet by party definition, you support the position that God has no place in the economic, social, cultural – any aspect of life in America?

Don’t lump me in with the Nancy Gordeuk’s of the world – I only pray that our president whether Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Oompa Loompa – recognize that his authority comes from the one true authority in heaven.

Yes, I read the Bible, but the difference between you and me is that I believe it all as perfect and infallible – and don’t pick and choose from the Bible what fits my personal preferences and needs.

And I don’t listen to hate-radio unless you consider Charles Stanley, Mark Rutland, Ken Ham, David Cooper, and even an occasional Joel Osteen as those that spew hate.

Reread my original post – it is hypocritical for a delegate of the Democratic National Party to attend the conference in Charlotte, vote to remove God and Israel from the Party language, boo loudly when the President overrides his followers and puts it back in, and then comes back home and writes a piece on how PROUD she is to be a true-blue Democrat – and then throws a “God bless the USA” tag line on the end as if that makes it all OK.

I guess the democrats encouraging people to go on food stamps and Obama stopping the "work for welfare" program is a "helping hand up". Sounds to me like your the one who was fooled.

Andy Luick - I just wanted to make sure you knew that the "bama phones" you refer to are a Lifeline program that started with landlines under Reagan, and expanded to cell phones under Bush 43.

Joan - thanks, I honestly didn't know that....either way, it should be done away with. I've never heard it advertised before Obama so assumed wrongly that it was created by the current administration. Either way...has to go. This whole notion that government needs to provide a permanent safety net for a its people is ridiculous. Our country has gotten fat, lazy & ignorant over the past number of decades...and, to me, the major cause is simply that people feel like they don't need to work....Uncle Bush or Uncle Obama will take care of me. We need to look at every single government entitlement program and cut as much as we can. When our economy is turned around then we can look at re-establishing some of these programs. For me, if it's not about educating our people or providing real job training and giving small businesses...not large ones....the incentive to create job & train workers...then we don't need the program.

I'm not an expert but almost every small business person I have spoken with is either closing shop or converting workers to 1099 subs to avoid Obama-care. The government can't handle what it already has...even with the expansion of workers. I'm sure I am not as learned on the topic as some of you...but it completely galls me to no end that we are where are in this country. How are we helping foreign countries when we have people starving here? It just doesn't make sense!

What accomplishments are you referring to in the last paragraph? I really am interested in the specifics that you see as positive results of President Obama's leadership in the last 4 years because I can name only a very few. And I am completely baffled by your description of him as someone who speaks softly and carries a big stick in reference to his foreign policy. He lied to the American people about the Benghazi attack when he knew almost immediately that it was a terrorist attack. Since an American consulate in a foreign country is considered American soil, why has he not responded to the attack and murder of our civil servants there? To me, the attack was an act of war. Where is Obama's big stick???

They didn't fall for Romney's "smooth talk?" No - they fell for Obama's smooth talk - and his deception (voter fraud, Fast and Furious, Libya, Iran shooting drone, keeping your doctor, price of insurance going down, etc.) and hand-outs. If you voted for Obama, watch what is happening now - Libya, Obamacare, and taxes in particular. As if that isn't bad enough, watch what happens in the future. Then you'll understand why so many voted for Mitt Romney.

This annoying Op-Ed is a perfect example of the animosity fostered between Americans. It is a shame that we can't disagree on issues without being petty and offensive. I think this Op-Ed written in a manner that is gloating rather than gracious in victory. It seems to be aimed at the people whose candidate lost the election. That is a terrible way to celebrate your victory. Interesting, isn't it, that the Republicans are more polite and gracious in defeat than the Democrats are in victory. Why are they so angry all the time?
