Restaurant Grades: Know Then Go

A look at restaurant inspections conducted by the health department in Greater Lilburn.

 

Below are this week's results of recent Gwinnett County restaurant inspections in Greater Lilburn by the East Metro Health District, which covers Gwinnett, Rockdale and Newton counties. Each report includes a synopsis of some of the deficiencies found by the inspector.

Arcado Elementary School, 5150 Arcado Road

Score: 100/A on March 13

Inspection type: routine

Previous scores: 91/A on Nov. 3, 2011 and 100/A on March 4, 2011

Boston Market, 4774 Highway 29

Score: 91/A on March 13

Inspection type: not noted

Previous scores: 91/A on Dec. 22, 2011 and 75/A on Dec. 17, 2011

Violations cited: Some containers and other wares were dirty. An employee wiped sanitizer off a thermometer probe instead of letting it air dry. An expired food service permit was on display. The "no smoking" notice was missing at the entrance. An employee touched the inside rim of the garbage can and then put food in the microwave without changing gloves. A cutting board was dirty.

Bread Biryani, 535 Indian Trail - Lilburn Road

Score: 50/U on March 9

Inspection Type: routine

Previous scores: 100/A on Feb. 9, 2011

Violations cited: Uncovered pitchers of water were given to customers, then rinsed afterward, not washed and sanitized. Some cold foods weren't kept cold enough, and some cooked foods hadn't cooled down to the required temperature quickly enough. Some cooked foods and sauces weren't marked with a preparation date. There was no thermometer to measure thin foods. Cloth was used to cover the naan bread when it was placed in the oven; an easily cleanable surface should be used instead. Tomato puree was kept in the opened can. An employee wiped his nose and didn't change gloves before handling clean food containers, and an employee didn't change gloves after handling raw chicken. All corrected on site except the lack of the thermometer.

China Wok Chinese Restaurant, 745 Beaver Ruin Road

Score: 97/A

Violations cited: The self-closing device on a door wasn't working.

Great China, 440 Pleasant Hill Road

Score: 95/A

Inspection type: follow-up

Previous scores: 61/U on Feb. 28, 2012 and 96/A on Dec. 28, 2011

Violations cited: The sanitizing solution for cloths needed more chlorine. Disposable Hefty bags were being washed and reused for barbecue pork and sweet and sour chicken. Both corrected on site. A prep cooler was leaking.

Judy's Diner, 5385 Lawrenceville Highway

Score: 100/A

McDonald's, 3015 Five Forks Trickum Road

Score: 78/C

Inspection type: routine

Previous inspections: 93/A on July 28, 2011 and 96/A on March 24, 2011

Violations cited: An employee didn't wash hands between loading dirty dishes and removing clean dishes from the washing machine, and an employee didn't wash hands between changing gloves after they came into contact with raw egg. Some foods weren't kept cold enough. An employee didn't have hair restrained properly while preparing food. All corrected on site.

Murray's in a Hurry, 722 Harbins Road

Score: 71/C

Inspection type: not noted

Previous scores: 91/A on Dec. 28, 2011 and 77/C on Dec. 20, 2011

Violations cited: An employee came back from a break and didn't wash hands before handling dirty dishes and disposable wares. An employee touched cheese with bare hands. The microwave oven was dirty. Food containers in the prep cooler had accumulated food residue, and shelving in the cooler was dirty. Some cold foods weren't kept cold enough, and some prepared foods hadn't cooled down quickly enough.

Yes, Jennifer. I don't yet know whether under new ownership/manager. But it's getting a new permit.
