Speak Out: Safety at Wells Fargo Banks

It was the first robbery at the location this year, but yes, this has happened before.

, a mother, her son and two other teenagers decided to do a little extracurricular activity. Although it was unclear if the mother actually checked them out of school to try for some free loot, still on a Friday afternoon that's where police said they were doing.

But, the suspects didn't bet on Ivy Cromer, who followed the suspects for eight to 10 milies while on the phone with police. Soon enough, Lilburn police officers were chasing the suspects down Highway 78. They were captured, after crashing the car on a railroad track on East Ponce de Leon Avenue. And, Cromer,

, the same bank was robbed again. This time a lone gunman was suspected in the robbery. The suspect entered the bank on a Friday morning, demanded money in a note to a teller, and then left with an undisclosed amount. Capt. Ben Haynes, with the , said a suspect has not been caught.

And, this time last year, Wells Fargo was experiencing a spate of robberies at branches in metro Atlanta. Lilburn, Norcross, Snellville and Stone Mountain were among the areas robbed. In one of those, , Wells Fargo offered a $5,000 award in the case. and charged for the robbery, according to Gwinnett County police.

A Wells Fargo spokesman, , said that now the tradition is to not have armed guards at banks. The company has found that having guards "adds an element of risk," said Jay Lawrence, a spokesman for the Atlanta regional area. Besides, the trend of bank robberies is down, he was quoted as saying.
