Bummer! Just saw this and wanted to add that this stinks for Kristi. Good luck Kristi! RTR!!!!Read More ------------- Patch was an interesting move into local media coverage. At a time that we consider 24/7 media almost intrusive Patch made it easy for the local communities to stay informed. Kristi made it worthwhile because she loves the area. --------------- @Mitch - Welcome to the Crimson Tide side of things! We'll let you Big 10 types enjoy the wonderful Tide any day. I'm sure the Alabama alumni faithful here in town will start a support group for any Big 10 fans that wish to enjoy a Crimson Tide game here and there.

I was just reading an article about the second polar vortex moving in next week for the U.S. (notRead More down this far next time thank goodness). You know I'm ready for July, but yesterday felt almost balmy after what we experienced early last week.
North Georgia Weather January 12, 2014 at 10:00 am
There are indications that another polar outbreak may happen, but not a certainty. I'm also going toRead More do a blog post on what the Polar Vortex is... This from Mr. Sutherland just a few minutes ago, as well as other updates on my NorthGeorgiaWeather Facebook page: In the longer range, there are some indications on the guidance that the EPO, which has been positive 9 of the last 15 days, could again go to negative. However, the AO could return to positive values. The PNA could remain generally positive. Such a pattern could result in cooler readings in the eastern third to half of the U.S., excepting Florida and perhaps the Gulf Coast, in the upcoming week and perhaps the last week of the month, as well. Some guidance suggests a bout of severe cold similar to the beginning of December and beginning of January, but there's enough uncertainty to be cautious about that idea. Regardless, snowfall prospect for the Great Lakes out to the northern Mid-Atlantic and southern New England regions could increase. Those areas have already enjoyed above normal snowfall to date and they appear to remain on course for a snowy winter.

From a Mid-Atlantic meteorologist a few minutes ago (sorry the Patch doesn't keep line breaks...):Read More --------------- "0z euro ensembles were locked into a very cold east half of the country. And its a stable look and not progressive. Op runs are going to jump around quite a bit over the next 3-5 days. Long wave pattern changes are notoriously difficult on the long range ops. IMO- the ridge bridge is a very high probability. Not a classic pattern but definitely better than anything we've seen so far. Storm track will be very active and the southern stream seems to be pretty wide open. Just click through the individual 6z gfs members. It's the kitchen sink with storm track but every member points toward an active pattern that includes the SE. I still think it will be a bit messy but appears to be plenty of moisture and energy to work with along with some cold available. Any west track will have CAD in front from what I'm seeing. I'm rooting for you guys. If you cash in so do I. We need the storm track further south than its been. Signs are improving.?

The 00Z Global deterministic and ensemble medium/long range guidance continue to advertIse a returnRead More to a -EPO / +PNA regime as we near the end of 2013. NGW, I am please to report that on Saturday, the weather in Powder Springs was passable. We tookRead More our umbrellas (which we needed a couple of times) and our coats (which we did not need at all). As he is a senior, the game Saturday was the last rec/public school game in which he will ever play - a bittersweet moment, as his team won.

There was some discussion going on about why we were having these big blast of polar air when theRead More "normal" blocking isn't there. Right now, the raging -WPO is pumping up ridging on the west and the Bermuda high is oriented just right to act as a block... or will be. (it's definitely been a block for winter weather!) But a meteorologist summed it up very nicely: "Pacific is great in dictating the arctic connection to the US, but the Atlantic dictates the evolution of s/w's across the US ... do they break into the Great Lakes, or does downstream forcing trump nonlinear growth."

I guess the NWS can say they were pretty close when they called for a high of 60F degrees yesterday.Read More My high was 58.6F, but that occurred at midnight, it was all downhill from there. But as far as I'm concerned, they busted on the high yesterday! After 3:36am, the temperature dropped below 50F and stayed there until around 1:30pm when it hit 50 very briefly (5-10 minutes), then went back below 50 and has stayed there ever since. Right now just Monday night/Tuesday morning, but it's all still up in the air at this point. ENSO Forecast
North Georgia Weather November 20, 2013 at 05:51 am
From the Huntsville forecast office this morning: THE EXTENDED FORECAST WILL BE FOCUSING LARGELY ONRead More THE EXTENT OF COLD AIR FILTERING INTO THE SOUTHEAST EARLY NEXT WEEK...AND THE EVENTUAL TRACK OF OUR NEXT LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM. THE LONGWAVE PRODUCING OUR FRONT AT THE END OF THIS WEEK WILL LEAVE A MID LEVEL CUTOFF LOW BEHIND OVER THE SW U.S. ...WHICH WILL BE PICKED UP BY THE NEXT WAVE ON MONDAY. BOTH THE ECMWF AND GFS CONTINUE TO BRING THIS LOW ACROSS TEXAS/LA AND DEVELOP A SFC LOW OVER THE NORTHERN GULF BEFORE TRACKING IT ACROSS THE SE ATLANTIC SEABOARD. IF WE WERE LOOKING AT A SYSTEM LIKE THIS LATER IN THE WINTER...THIS WOULD BE A CLASSIC SETUP FOR DECENT WINTER PRECIP ACROSS OUR AREA. *BUT*...WE ARE NOT EXPECTING ENOUGH OF A COLD AIRMASS TO BE IN PLACE AHEAD OF THIS SYSTEM AND ITS STILL IN THE FAR EXTENDED OF THE FCST PERIOD...WHICH NATURALLY LEADS TO SKEPTICISM ABOUT WHETHER THE TRACK OF THE LOW WILL VERIFY. THIS ALL BEING SAID...WE WILL HAVE TO WATCH THE EVOLUTION OF THIS SYSTEM CLOSELY FOR THE POTENTIAL OF AT LEAST A WINTRY MIX AT ONSET AND END OF PRECIP EARLY/MID NEXT WEEK. FOR THE TIME BEING WILL REMAIN CAUTIOUS OF POTENTIAL CHANGES TO THE TRACK/TEMPS...AND HAVE KEPT ONLY RAIN IN THE FORECAST WITH TEMPS IN THE MID 30S TUES/WED MORNING.

.SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/... RAIN SLOW TO DEVELOP THIS MORNING OVER THE MID SOUTHRead More SO HAVE BACKED OFF A LITTLE ON TIMING OF PRECIP TODAY OVER NORTH GA. ONLY EXPECTING LIGHT AMOUNTS WITH LOW LEVEL DRY AIR IN PLACE. H5 SHORTWAVE TROUGH AXIS PASSES THRU STATE BY 00Z SAT SO EXPECT LIGHT RAIN/SHOWERS TO END... HOWEVER... WARM ADVECTION AND EASTERLY SFC FLOW WILL CONTINUE AS SW FLOW ALOFT AND LARGER SHORTWAVE TROUGH APPROACHES. THIS IS A CLASSIC PATTERN /IN BETWEEN WAVES/ FOR FOG AND DRIZZLE. Yea, the chances are very low now, and that's expected for this time of year. It would have been aRead More rare event indeed had it snowed at all. It was brought to my attention I had quite a few links messed up in the blog post. The Patch changedRead More the way they processed the link box and it (I) added some stuff that didn't work. Any way... here is a link (http://www.daculaweather.com/4_gfs_12_500_nws_loop.php) to see what Steve Nelson was talking about in the clip I added at the end of the blog post. The is the 12Z GFS model that is depicting 500 mb levels (~18,000 feet). Notice in frame 32 through 65 how a piece of energy dives south out of Canada into the southwestern US, before moving east and forming a closed upper level low. It the winter time this would possible be a snow maker. If something like this does happen, it would still draw some very cold Canadian air to the southeast.
