Lilburn Votes: 'A Poll Manager's Dream'

At the Berkmar United Methodist Church, workers and voters were all smiles on Election Day, making one poll manager very happy.

As Election Day turned into Election Night, spirits were still high at Berkmar United Methodist Church. The church is the polling place for Precinct 103, which includes Lilburn and Lawrenceville residents. About 6 p.m., some 970 people had voted at the location. In the 2008 election, 961 total ballots were cast there, so before polls closed the precinct was already outpacing itself. Thankful, dedicated voters made the long hours for workers worth it. -- For all Lilburn election-related coverage, see the 2012 Lilburn Area Election Guide. -- "It's been steady and extremely polite," said poll manager David Bugg, of voters. "A poll manager's dream. They were cooperative. Everyone was helpful to each other." "Weather did not deter them in any …

Georgia Charter Schools Amendment Appears to Pass

The constitutional amendment grants the state authority to approve charter schools, whether local school boards want them or not.

Georgia voters gave the state more authority over charter schools on Tuesday, passing a constitutional amendment empowering a commission to overrule local school districts that reject charter school petitions. With all counties fully reporting, the hotly contested amendment had support of 58.5 percent of voters. See selected county results below. It was an emotionally charged issue that in some ways united Georgians across political and demographic lines. A Peach Pundit poll from late October had found "no significant difference [in support] based on whether a voter is a Republican or a Democrat, a male or a female, or based on race." Camille Cottrell, an Emory University instructor and card-carrying Democrat, is an example of the …

Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election, according to projections.

President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan, according to network projections. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the…

Mitt Romney Wins Georgia

Voters in Georgia on Tuesday cast their ballot for Mitt Romney, giving him the state's 16 Electoral votes, according to early results.

In a move that fell in line with expectations, Mitt Romney was projected to win Georgia’s 16 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Democrat Barack Obama. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Republican candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Georgia and spent more time visiting the Peach State to raise money. The state has been a Republican stronghold in recent presidential elections.  The economy was a key issue for many voters in Georgia state, which has had a higher than average unemployment rate. Turnout was strong in Georgia and early voting was almost as popular this year as four years ago. …

Most people cannot survive on welfare and food stamps. You cannot pay your mortgage or rent and all of your utilities. I admit that you can "adjust" to having less money, but it's not really a fun place to be. There have always been people who will take advantage of the system, but the increase in costs for these programs is, in a bit part, due to high unemployment. If companies would stop …   more ›

Lilburn Votes: First Voters at Berean Baptist Church

Before the polls even opened, people were lined up and ready to vote. Patch went to the front of the line to see who was first.

Dwight and Pat Minton didn't plan on being the first in line, but they were -- beating hundreds of others who will follow behind them at the Berean Baptist Church polling place in Lilburn. The two got up at 5 a.m. to get in front of the crowds. "We just didn't want to stand in line," said Pat Minton, 67. "And, we just happened to be the first in line," said Dwight Minton, 68 The early voting lines told the couple they could not dilly-dally on Election Day. Some in Gwinnett County waited seven to eight hours in line for advanced in-person voting. "Every time there's an election we vote here," Dwight Minton said, "and, we really never had to wait very long, but we decided since the early voting was so long that we might need to get here, so …

How Did Your Precinct Vote in 2008?

Patch breaks the numbers down for you on how your Lilburn precinct voted in the 2008 presidential election.

(Editor's Note: This story has been amended from an earlier version.) In the last presidential election, Lilburn overwhelming went for the Republican candidate, Sen. John McCain. That's not surprising considering that Gwinnett County went for McCain, as well. But, that win for McCain, was not a landslide -- 54.56 percent of voters went for McCain and 44.35 percent for then-Sen. Barack Obama, according to unofficial voting results from Gwinnett County. Who Voted for Obama? In Lilburn, five precincts went for Obama, who would eventually become president. Those were: Where Were the Most Republican Votes? The Mountain Park area had the most votes for McCain in 2008. Precinct 14, which votes at Mountain Park Depot on Five Forks Trickum Road, …

Charter school amendment appears headed for win.

UPATE 5:50 pm If you are in line to vote at 7 pm, you will get to vote even though the polls close then. Tens of thousands of Fulton County voters have already cast ballots today. Turnout is especially high for today’s General Election, as it is in most Presidential election years. It's too early to know how this year compares to 2008.
