Five Things to Know, April 5

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Two more days left of Spring Break!  Do you know of anything happening around town today or tomorrow?  Tell us in the comments.

The weather: Expect thunderstorms today after 1 p.m.  The day will be cloudy with a high near 80 and a 60% chance of rain.  Bring an umbrella!  If you're an early riser, know that the sun will rise this morning at 7:19 a.m. and set at 8:02 p.m.

Gas prices:  Around 5 p.m. last night, the QuikTrip on the corner of Stone Mountain Hwy. near Stone Dr. sold gas for $3.74.  Kroger (3050 Five Forks Trickum Rd.) sold it for $3.75, while the rest averaged between $3.76 and $3.81.

Become a Knight in Training:  Medieval Times in Lawrenceville is offering free knight-in-training classes to the first 100 children (ages 5-12) that show up to the venue.  According to their website, children will  watch an exclusive weapons demonstration by the knights of Medieval Times, learn about the standards and training necessary to become a knight, and engage in hands-on sword-fighting sequences under the guidance of the Medieval Times team. Upon completion, children will be knighted into the realm.  This exclusive event continues through April 8.

Love, not War: On this day in 1969, protests occurred all over the U.S. in reaction to the Vietnam War.  About 100,000 protestors marched from New York City to demand that the U.S. abandon the war in Vietnam.  It was an important year for civil disobedience.  Were you involved in the '69 protests?  Do you see any connections between then and the Occupy movement now?

The World Loses a Star:  Actor Charlton Heston passed away on this day in 2008.  His claim to fame was in classic films like The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur.  In the 50s and 60s, he spoke openly against racism and was a strong supporter of the Civil Rights Movement.  He was also a World War II veteran.
