Five Things to Know Today, April 12

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Thursday. Here are some things to know about today.

The weather: It'll be sunny but cool, with a high of about 66 degrees, the National Weather Service says. The low tonight will be around 42.

Gas prices: Some relatively good news -- At least one station in Lilburn was selling regular for $3.72 (Chevron at 775 Beaver Ruin Road), according to reports to www.georgiagasprices.com. The highest price reported was unchanged from yesterday at $3.87 (at Citgo, 1218 Turner Road at Five Forks Trickum).

War: Confederate forces opened artillery fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston Bay at 4:30 a.m. on April 12, 1861, the first shots of the Civil War. The isolated Union post had refused to surrender peacefully, and the Confederate barrage lasted 34 hours, until the undersupplied garrison gave up on April 13. Accounts from the time describe Charleston residents sitting on balconies that overlooked the harbor, toasting the start of war with their drinks.

Faire: It’s a little bit of a drive, but the Georgia Renaissance Festival opens its annual two-month run this weekend in Fairburn, southwest of Atlanta on I-85. Billed as “a re-creation of a 16th-Century European Country Faire,” it has ten stages for music and entertainment, jousting knights, a mock Tudor village and plenty of costumed characters, as well as hearty food and more crafts than you can shake a broadaxe at. It’s open Saturdays and Sundays through June 3. It’s been around for 27 years, so it’s almost historic.

Walk: There’s still time to sign up and gear up for the Lilburn Relay Rally in two weeks. The event is a fund raiser under the umbrella of the American Cancer Society. Team members take turns walking in a night-long relay. It’s an annual event that will be start at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 27, at Lilburn City Park. There are already 10 teams signed up with 94 participants, and room for lots more.
