Five Things to Know Today, April 16

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Monday and a new week. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: We may get some rain today - there's a 30 percent chance, mainly after 2 p.m. The high will be about 83 degrees and the low tonight around 59.

Gas prices moved in the right direction over the weekend. The highest price reported for Lilburn to www.georgiagasprices.com was $3.79 (at Shell, 4088 Five Forks Trickum Road, and at six other places), and the lowest was $3.74 (at QuikTrip, 4900 Stone Mountain Hwy near Stone Drive).

Commute. As you drive to or from work, it may help to think of those who have an even longer trek. How about Odysseus, the Greek warrior and king, who sailed for home after winning the Trojan War? His commute should have taken a few days, but for angering the gods, he and his crew were blown around the Mediterranean and into a series of adventures. For ten years. According to historical calculations based on the date of a solar eclipse, today could be the day he finally made it home, in 1178 BC.

Not quite tax day. In case you haven’t heard, and are still up to your elbows in forms, the IRS deadline for filing your 2011 income tax return isn’t until tomorrow. It was put off one day by the fact that April 15 was a Sunday this year, and by another day because Monday is a local holiday observed in the District of Columbia , where the IRS is headquartered. The holiday, by the way, is Emancipation Day, marking the day in 1862 when President Lincoln signed an act freeing slaves in D.C., nine months before his national declaration of the same.

Teens. Save the date: The Teen Summit 2012 is coming up on April 28 for Gwinnett middle and high schoolers, parents and community groups. It’s a conference-style meeting at the Norcross Cultural Arts & Community Center. There’ll be improv group entertainment and sessions on topics from bullying to growing up in an open world. It runs from noon to 6 p.m.
