Five Things to Know Today, April 17

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Tuesday. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: Don't forget your umbrella today - the chance of rain is 80 percent, according to the National Weather Service, which says there's a chance before noon, between noon and 2 p.m., and after two. Don't ask me, I just work here. Now, on to better things. The high will be about 77 degrees. The low tonight will be around 58, and the chance of rain increases to 90 percent in the evening.

Gas prices: Nice, relatively speaking -- lower today than yesterday. The lowest price reported to www.georgiagasprices.com for Lilburn as of late Monday was $3.71 (at QuikTrip, 4900 Stone Mountain Hwy near Stone Drive), and the highest was $3.79 (at Shell, 4088 Five Forks Trickum Road at Killian Hill, and at seven other places).

Infamous. Leo Frank was a leading member of Atlanta's Jewish community, the largest in the South, and ran the National Pencil Factory. That all came crashing down in 1913, when teenage factory worker Mary Phagan was found murdered after collecting her wages at the plant. Leo Frank was arrested and convicted of murder in an infamous trial where much of the evidence showed he was innocent. His death sentence was commuted to life in prison in 1915, but that enraged anti-Semitic activists. On August 16, 1915, an armed gang stormed the Georgia State Prison in Milledgeville, carried away Leo Frank and lynched him the next day near Phagan’s home outside Marietta. Frank was born on this day in 1884 in Texas.

Bats. The flying kind. It’s Bat Appreciation Day, meant to draw attention to the need for conservation to preserve bats around the world. In our region, bats are big mosquito and bug eaters. You can help bats and your own backyard by putting up a bat house to attract them and give them shelter. In return, they’ll eat as many mosquitoes as your yard can produce.

Meteors. The Lyrids meteor shower is coming up. Thanks to the Gwinnett County parks departments, you can join the Atlanta Astronomy Club in watching from the county’s highest point on April 21 at midnight. There’ll be warm drinks, snacks and explanations of the meteor shower. It’s in Auburn, the cost is $7 and you can pre-register by calling 770-614-2060.
