Five Things to Know Today, April 20

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Friday. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: We may have some fog and rain this morning, and there's a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. It'll be cloudy, in any case, and the high will be about 70 degrees. The low tonight will be around 58 degrees. The chance of rain is 20 percent today, but increases to 60 percent tomorrow. We should see sunshine again on Sunday.

Gas prices: A handful of stations had regular for less than $3.70 a gallon on Thursday, according to reports to www.georgiagasprices.com. The lowest was $3.67 (at QuikTrip, 4900 Stone Mountain Hwy near Stone Drive). The highest price for Lilburn was $3.75 (at Shell, 722 Harbins Road at Dickens Road.)

Space: We haven’t sent a human farther into space than orbit since the last lunar landing mission in December 1972. The second to last mission, Apollo 16, landed on the Moon early on April 21, 1972, according to mission time, which was late on April 20 in the United States. It was the fifth lunar landing and the astronauts spent nearly three days on the surface, walking and driving the Lunar Roving Vehicle. It was the second mission to bring along an LRV and the first to explore the lunar highlands.

Happy birthday …. John Muir, a founding American naturalist and conservationist of the 19th century credited with convincing President Teddy Roosevelt to protect Yosemite and the Grand Canyon as national parks. Muir was an immigrant, born in Scotland in 1838. He eventually landed in the mountains and wilderness of California, climbing peaks on his own and writing eloquently about the need to preserve the nation’s natural treasures from rapacious development. “Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.”
