Five Things to Know Today, April 27

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to finally Friday. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: Mostly cloudy today, with a 30 percent chance of rain, mainly before 8 p.m. Let's hope it doesn't rain on the Lilburn Relay Rally, which starts at 5 p.m. in the Lilburn City Park. The high today will be around 84, and the low tonight about 61 degrees.

Gas prices: Well, whaddya know. A gallon of regular can be had for $3.59 in Lilburn, according to www.georgiagasprices.com (at Shell, 5414 Five Forks Trickum Road). The highest price reported to the website as of late Thursday was $3.69 (at Chevron, 4784 Hwy 29 at Killian Hill, and at two other places).

Cure: The annual Lilburn Relay Rally is this evening, an event that raises money for cancer research and treatment and celebrates cancer survivors. It’s part of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life series. There’ll be music, a candlelight ceremony, a walking relay and family activities. It starts at 5 p.m. at City Park.

Books: Gwinnett County is blessed to have an excellent support group for families of children and adults with autism. Spectrum is a volunteer-driven organization that provides all kinds of resources and guidance. They’re having a fundraiser Saturday with the generous help of the Books-A-Million location at Discover Mills in Lawrenceville. Just on Saturday, 10 percent of book sales will go to Spectrum for its programs. There will also be kid’s book characters on hand, including Clifford the Big Red Dog.

Move: The ancient Chinese art of tai chi is a so-called soft style of martial arts that millions of people around the world learn and practice for all kinds of good reasons: low-impact exercise, balance and coordination, fun, and, in Chinese theory, regeneration of your own natural energy. Saturday is World Tai Chi Day and practitioners and would-be practitioners are encouraged to come out and do the forms at 10 a.m. local time, all together or just where you are. Happy movement!
