Five Things to Know Today, August 18

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Thursday. Here are some things to know as you head into the day.

The weather: There's a 20 percent chance of rain between 2 p.m. and 2 a.m. tomorrow. Otherwise, it will be mostly sunny with a high of 91 degrees. The low tonight should be about 68 degrees.

New farmers on the block: There's a new farmers market at 675 Pleasant Hill Road, every Tuesday. Check back later today with Lilburn Patch for more information.

Gas prices: The average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.584 in the U.S. late Wednesday, little changed from a day earlier. In Georgia, it was $3.533.

Happy birthday, Mrs. Carter: Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter was born on this day in 1927. In fact, it seems to be a pretty good day to be born. Also celebrating today are Robert Redford, Roman Polanski and Patrick Swayze, to name just a few.

Roses are red: Add this one to the "There's really a day for that?" category -- it's Bad Poetry Day. So forgive me, but it seems only fitting to publish something from William McGonagall, considered by some to be the world's worst poet, writing about a highly regarded poet, Robert Burns:

"Immortal Robert Burns of Ayr,
There's but few poets can with you compare;
Some of your poems and songs are very fine:
To "Mary in Heaven" is most sublime;
And then again in your "Cottar's Saturday Night",
Your genius there does shine most bright,
As pure as the dewdrops of the night."
