Five Things to Know Today, Dec. 22

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Thursday. Here are some things to know as you impatiently wait for Santa.

Calling Rudolph! Be careful this morning: The National Weather Service has issued a warning of possible dense fog, with visibility of less than a quarter of a mile possible until about 8 a.m. More showers and thunderstorms are probable today, with a 70 percent chance. The high will be around 71 degrees, with a low tonight of about 51.

Gas prices: Check out Patch's Traffic and Gas page before you head out this morning. Gas prices are still headed lower, according to AAA, with the average for a gallon of regular about 6 cents lower than a week ago nationwide, at $3.206. In Georgia, the average is $3.123.

Savannah's fall. Union General William T. Sherman rode into Savannah on Dec. 22, 1864, ending his March to the Sea campaign that left a swath of destruction across Georgia and crippled Confederate infrastructure. "I beg to present you, as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah ... " Sherman wrote in a note that day to President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln wrote back: "Many, many thanks for your Christmas gift – the capture of Savannah." Sherman also gave a U.S. Treasury representative possession of all rice, cotton and public buildings in Savannah that his troops didn't need.

Break the mold. Do something different and head for midtown Atlanta with your little one for Toddler Thursdays at the High Museum of Art. C'mon, it'll be fun to hit the city just before Christmas, and the High is an inspiring and cool space, even for young kids. The toddler program involves making art with shapes and runs from 11 a.m to 3. p.m. It's free for members, or $18 adult admission (but kids under 5 are free).

Think ahead. The Gwinnett Public Library just announced that best-selling mystery author Lisa Gardner will speak at a "Lunch & Listen" event in February.  Gardner's numerous novels include "Hide" and "The Third Victim," and her latest, "Catch Me," is coming out the week she's speaking in Lawrenceville on Feb. 9. She'll read from her new book, take questions and sign copies.
