Five Things to Know Today, Dec. 26

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to the first day of Kwanzaa, the second day of Christmas, and Boxing Day. Who said Mondays are boring? Here are some things to know as you head into the day.

The weather: It'll be increasingly cloudy today, the National Weather Service says, with a high of 58 degrees. The low tonight will be around 40, and there's a 90 percent chance of rain.

Gas prices: Check Patch's Gas and Traffic tab before heading out this morning. Looks like there are still places that offer regular gas for less than $3 a gallon in Lilburn. Prices range from $2.97 (at Kroger, 4155 Lawrenceville Hwy at Beaver Ruin Road) to $3.12 (at Shell, 4975 Lawrenceville Hwy at Holly Ridge Drive), according to www.georgiagasprices.com.

It's not over. Those 12 days of Christmas in the song? They're just getting started. We've largely lost the tradition, but our early American ancestors still observed the 12 days starting with Christmas Day and lasting until Three Kings Day, or Epiphany, on Jan. 6. So break out the punch, roast the popping corn, get ready to dance. Let's celebrate the old fashioned way! At least until everybody goes back to work tomorrow.

It's almost over. Patch's contest for the best outside Christmas decorations ends today. The prize is $100,000 for local public schools, and finalists get their December electric bills paid.

It's in the sauce. The ladies who shared their lives and tribulations in and around the Whistle Stop Cafe went national on this day in 1991 with the release of the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes."  The movie was filmed in several locations around Georgia. Jessica Tandy won the 1992 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
