Five Things to Know Today, Dec. 28

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Go into the office with a bit of knowledge today.

The weather: A high of 50 and a low around 29 is the forecast for the day, according to the National Weather Service. It may get a bit nippy, but at least the skies will be sunny and clear.

Gas prices: Check Patch's Traffic and Gas page before heading out this morning. Prices for gas look like they may be sticking for good under the $3 range, at least for a while. With that said, I probably just jinxed it.

Hanukkah ends. Today marks the last day of Hanukkah, which is known as Zot Hanukkah. The day is considered to be the "final seal" of the High Holiday season of Yom Kippur, and also a time to repent out of love for God. Hasidic and Kabbalistic literature says Zot Hanukkah is particularly auspicious for fulfilling prayers.

Burning crops. Cotton prices had been falling in the early 20th century, so on this day in 1904, farmers in Georgia burned two million bales in attempt to increase market prices.

Pranks, Childermas and unlucky days. In Catholicism and Lutheranism, today is the Feast of the Holy Innocents, also known as the Massacre of the Innocents, Childermas, or Bairns' Day. The day refers to the story of the King of Judea, Herod the Great, and how he orders the execution of all young male children in Bethlehem on this day. According to the Gospel of Matthew, Herod makes the order to avoid the loss of his throne to (ahem) a certain newborn. In Ireland, Childermas is considered to be one of the unluckiest days in folk custom, so it's recommended no journeys, marriages or new business ventures should take place on this day. In the Philippines, Spain and Latin America, pranks fill the day, similar to April Fools' Day.
