Five Things to Know Today, Dec. 7

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Wednesday. Here are some things to know about the day.

The weather: Rain is a sure thing again today, and we may get as much as half an inch. The high will be a gusty 50 degrees (with winds up to 35 miles per hour), and the low tonight a bracing 28.

Gas prices: A gallon of regular costs on average $3.209 in Georgia, according to AAA, and nationwide, it's $3.275. Prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com for Lilburn in the past 24 hours ranged from $3.15 (at Kroger, 3050 Five Forks Trickum near Oak Road) to $3.26 (at Murphy USA, 3950 Lawrenceville Hwy near Lester Road).

Music: Classical guitar can be hard to find in live performance. Tonight there's a chance to catch a concert for free at the library in Buford. Guitarist Jeffrey Bianchi will perform classical pieces including catalana melodies, etudes for guitar, plus renaissance and baroque lutes. It starts at 6:30 tonight.

Fire: It's the anniversary of the deadliest hotel fire in U.S. history, a 1946 blaze at the Winecoff Hotel in downtown Atlanta. A total of 119 people died, including hotel founder William Winecoff, some from the fire and some leaping from on high because the fire trucks didn't have ladders that could reach all the way up the 15 story building. The disaster helped prompt new hotel fire and safety codes nationally. The building is now the luxury Ellis Hotel.

Remember. It's National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. The 1941 Japanese attack on the U.S.claimed more than 2,400 American lives and sent us plunging into World War II. By congressional proclamation, the flag can be flown at half-staff today until sunset in honor of those lost.
