Five Things to Know Today, Feb. 10

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Friday. Here are some things to know as you head into your weekend.

The weather: Cloudier as the day progresses, the National Weather Service says, with a high of 58 degrees. There's a 20 percent chance of rain tonight before 1 a.m., and the low will be around 37. A cold front will be moving in, with highs of about 48 on Saturday and 46 on Sunday. The lows on Saturday and Sunday will be in the low 20s. Brrrr.

Gas prices: No surprise, but gas prices are on the rise. A gallon of regular can still be had for $3.45 in Lilburn, according to www.georgiagasprices.com (at QuikTrip, 4900 Stone Mountain Hwy near Stone Drive), but the upper end is now nine cents higher than yesterday at $3.58 (at Texaco, 4785 Lawrenceville Hwy at Indian Trail Lilburn Road).

Spies. The US traded a Soviet spy, Rudolph Ivanovich Abel, for captured CIA pilot Gary Powers on this day in 1962. The trade took place on a narrow bridge across a lake on the border between what was then East and West Germany. Powers was shot down while flying a U-2 spy plane high over the Soviet Union and parachuted to the ground. The case revealed to the world the existence of the U-2 program, which photographed Soviet military and other installations from altitudes as high as 70,000 feet.

Pull my wool. Let’s take a Friday trip across the pond (Atlantic) to … the English tabloid The Sun, which has posted video of what it claims, with many qualifiers and “reportedly”s, could be a woolly mammoth discovered alive in Siberia. The mammoth, you may recall, died out during the last Ice Age thousands of years ago. But it’s a great video, supposedly shot by a government engineer working in Siberia. You decide!

Movies. This weekend’s new releases start with the family-oriented adventure tale "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," with Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson leading kids and love interest to an uncharted treasure isle. (See the review on Patch tomorrow morning.) There’s also the 3D re-release of the prequel "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace." On the action side, Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds fight off assassins and try to figure out who’s sending them, in "Safe House."  And in "The Vow," Rachel McAdams wakes up with amnesia after a car crash to find herself married to Channing Tatum, who has to struggle to win her back now that the memories of their life together have been erased.
