Five Things to Know Today, Feb. 15

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Wednesday. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: Drive carefully on your commute this morning -- we'll have some fog before 10 a.m., the National Weather Service says. The sun should come out after the fog clears, but we'll probably get more rain tonight. The high will be around 63 and the low tonight about 49 degrees.

Gas prices are little changed from yesterday. The lowest price for a gallon of regular reported to www.georgiagasprices.com as of 10 p.m. Tuesday was $3.41 (at Kroger, 3050 Five Forks Trickum Road near Oak Road, and at two other places). The highest was $3.58 (at Texaco, 4785 Lawrenceville Hwy at Indian Trail-Lilburn Road).

Computers. The first general purpose computer, as opposed to ones developed to do a specific task like military encrypting, was formally launched on this day in 1946. The room-filling machine called Eniac, for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, was developed at the University of Pennsylvania under an Army program. By today’s standards it was huge and weak: ENIAC could handle 5,000 addition problems per second, compared to billions of operations per second by the tiny processors inside our laptops and smartphones. But it’s credited with sparking the imagination of scientists and companies, and we know where all that development has led: reading this here.

A big day. It’s the birthday of Susan B. Anthony, one of the key campaigners for women’s right to vote in this country. Some states observe this as Susan B.Anthony Day,  though not Georgia. Born in 1820, she dedicated her adult life to giving women a voice in our democracy but died 14 years before the Constitution was finally amended in 1920 to end the restriction of voting rights to male citizens. In her heyday, she gave as many as 100 speeches a year, traveling across the U.S. and Europe to stump for universal suffrage. Happy birthday, Ms. Anthony.

Meet the Chick. Seniors can tour the Chick-fil-A corporate headquarters on February 22 on a tour arranged by the Gwinnett County parks and recreation department. There’ll be a morning pickup from two park senior centers, at Bethesda Park in Lawrenceville and another in Suwanee. It costs $10.50 per person, including a Chick-fil-A lunch, and you can register ahead of time at 770-822-5414.
