Five Things to Know Today, Feb. 22

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Wednesday. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: It'll get cloudier as the day goes on, and there's a 30 percent chance of rain after 1 p.m., and it may be a little windy. The high will be around 66 degrees, and the low tonight about 53.

Gas prices are heading up. The average in the U.S. is $3.57, and Georgia's average is in the second-highest price bracket nationwide, according to AAA. In Lilburn, the cheapest price for a gallon of regular on Tuesday was $3.52 (at Citgo, 5355 Lawrenceville Hwy, and at Citgo, 331 Rockbridge Road). The highest price was $3.59 (at Shell, 722 Harbins Road, and at two other stations.)

Your thoughts? It’s World Thinking Day, observed by the Girl Scouts and their sister organizations to focus attention on girls around the world and what girls can do to make the planet a better place. The event was first created by international girl scouts and guides in 1926 and renamed World Thinking Day in 1999 to emphasize the global scale. The scout movement picks a theme for activities each year. This year it’s the environment, under the motto “Girls worldwide say ‘We can save our planet.’”

Tech. It’ll be Teen Tech Week at Gwinnett County public libraries next week, including the Lilburn and Mountain Park branches. Events include tech sessions, where you can bring your own laptops, iPads or other devices to find out what books and library resources are downloadable. Check the library systems Teen Events page for March for more.

Lent. Carnival’s over, the fat times are done, and it’s Ash Wednesday on the Christian religious calendar. That means we’re in Lent, the period ahead of  Easter when many people give up favorite luxuries or otherwise fast. It’s a practice that has spread as well into the broader pop culture. Are you giving up anything for Lent? Tell us in the comments.
