Five Things to Know Today, Feb. 27

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Monday and a new week. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: Mostly cloudy today, with a high of about 60 degrees. There's a 20 percent chance of rain before 1 p.m. The low tonight will be around 47.

Gas prices: Yikes. Nothing less than $3.64 in Lilburn, according to prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com (at Texaco, 4090 Five Forks Trickum Road). The highest prices reported was $3.70 (at Phillips 66, 5044 Lawrenceville Hwy).

Schools. It’s the first of two half-days at Gwinnett County public schools, so with time on our hands, let’s recall that this was the founding date of one of the oldest universities in the world. The University of Constantinople was set up in 425 AD in the late stages of the Roman Empire, mainly to train people for the ranks of administrators of the great capital of the eastern part of the empire. The school flourished for centuries but faded after the city was sacked by Crusaders from Europe in the 13th century.

History. After exploring Prohibition and Nazi-era Berlin in recent sessions, it’s Russia’s turn to be the subject of the History Book Club at the Gwinnett County Public Library. The latest selection is “Catherine the Great: Portrait of a woman” by Robert K. Massie, available as an electronic book from the library as well as in hard copy. The discussion meeting is March 19 at 7 p.m. at the Gwinnett History Museum in Lawrenceville.

Telecommuting. Feeling a little alone because you work from home? Don’t. There’s a whole national association for you, and even a national observance this week. Telecommuter Appreciation Week honors the brave men and women who can work in pajamas if they want, and don’t have to eat breakfast in traffic or put on makeup at red lights. Seeing gas prices this week probably makes the whole telecommuting thing more attractive, right?
