Five Things to Know Today, Jan. 13

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Friday, the 13th of January. Here are some things to know today. Good luck to us all!

The weather: Mostly sunny, but brrr. The high will be about 42, and the low tonight, around 25. Nothing but sunshine in the forecast for the weekend, but it won't get warmer than 53 degrees (on Sunday).

Gas prices: Gas can still be had for $3.29 a gallon in Lilburn (for example at Texaco, 4090 Five Forks Trickum at Killian Hill Road), but the high end of the range has inched up to $3.41 (at QuickTrip, 4900 Stone Mountain Highway).

Spell this. It’s the first Friday the 13th of the year (there will be two more, in April and July). There is a word for fear of this day: friggatriskaidekaphobia, which includes the name of the Norse goddess Frigga, for whom Friday is named, and Greek for the number 13. Experts apparently aren’t clear on when and where the day’s unlucky reputation comes from: The first written record in English dates back only to the 19th century.

Dance for kids with autism. Looking for an outlet for all that energy in your little one on the autism spectrum? Maybe something that also helps with focus and giving a sense of accomplishment, with a little music and social interaction thrown in? There’s a new class starting at one of the closer Gwinnett County Parks facilities to Lilburn, the Pinckneyville Community Recreation Center, with an experienced dance teacher in one of the newest, nicest park buildings around. Dance Therapy is Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for just $33 a month. Kim Gerlach from the parks department is organizing it (she’s also setting up a painting and drawing class and a pottery class as creative therapy). You can register online or call the Pinckneyville center at 770.417.2200.

Movies. It’s a mixed bag of new releases.  For the younger set, and Disney fans in general, Beauty and the Beast 3D revives the 1991 animated film for today’s 3D technology. On the musical side, Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton team up in Joyful Noise to save a gospel choir. And Mark Wahlberg is a reformed criminal who has to return to his old smuggling ways to help his brother in Contraband.
