Five Things to Know Today, Jan. 2

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to the new year, Lilburn! Here's what to know today, the last day of winter break for Gwinnett school kids.

The weather: Brrr. The high today will be about 45 degrees, and the thermometer may dip down to 22 tonight. It'll be mostly sunny until Friday, the National Weather Service says.

Gas prices in Georgia are mid-range for AAA's average prices across the U.S. Prices in Lilburn reported to www.georgiagasprices.com in the past 24 hours range from $3.14 (at Kroger, 4155 Lawrenceville Hwy at Beaver Ruin Road) to $3.27 (at Texaco, 4785 Lawrenceville Hwy at Indian Trail Lilburn Road).

Bowl day. There are six college bowl games today, from lunchtime to primetime, so you've got it made if college ball is your thing and as long as your TV gets multiple flavors of ESPN. Highlights include the Rose Bowl meeting of Oregon and Wisconsin and the nighttime Fiesta Bowl in Arizona pitting Oklahoma State against Stanford, each with an 11-1 record.

Constitution. Georgia became the fourth state to ratify the spanking new U.S. Constitution on this day in 1788. The action was taken by a group of delegates in the then-state capital Augusta, who voted unanimously. The Constitution only needed ratification by nine states to take effect, but in the end all 13 states that existed at the time supported it, the last one being Rhode Island in 1790.

By Jupiter! The clear, cold nights this week are a great time to get a good look at Jupiter, one of the brightest objects in the sky at the moment. The biggest planet in our solar system will be very visible along with the waxing moon for much of the night, while Venus will be out in the early evening.
