Five Things to Know Today, Jan. 27

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Friday and congratulations for making it through the workweek. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: It'll be cloudy at first, but then the sun should come through. The high will be around 59, with some wind, the National Weather Service says. The low tonight will be about 36 degrees. We'll have mostly sunshine this weekend.

Gas prices in Lilburn seem to be pretty stable, with prices for a gallon of regular ranging from $3.35 (at Citgo, 331 Rockbridge Road at Lawrenceville Highway) to $3.49 (at Texaco, 4785 Lawrenceville Highway at Indian Trail Lilburn Road). The national average is 14 cents higher than a month ago, according to AAA.

Fly high. Everyone thinks of Delta as an Atlanta airline, but it started off based in far-away Monroe, Louisiana, in the 1920s. It wasn’t until Jan. 27, 1941, that the young airline announced it would move to Atlanta, a more strategic hub. It had just 21 planes at the time (today it’s more than 700). The size of the deal seems small by today’s multi-million dollar standards: The city of Atlanta paid $50,000 to build Delta a hanger and an office building. Delta agreed to stay for 20 years and cover extra costs. The airline moved into its new headquarters on March 1, 1941.

That’s a lot of back issues. That great American institution of adventure and exploration, the National Geographic Society, was founded on this day in 1888. It was the product of a group of 33 men, including geographers, teachers, military officers and financiers. They met around an oak table at the Cosmos Club in Washington D.C. and agreed to organize a society “for the increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge.” It was officially incorporated on Jan. 27. The first president was the father-in-law of Alexander Graham Bell, Gardiner Greene Hubbard. The first magazine came out nine months later. Somewhere they’ve been stacking up ever since.

Movies. Lots of action this weekend. Liam Neeson heads a cast of tough guys chased by big wolves through the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash, in “The Grey.” Katherine Heigl in “One for the Money” is a Jersey woman driven by unemployment to sign up with a relative’s bail bond company and chase bail jumpers, including an ex-boyfriend. And there’s “Man on a Ledge”, a thriller with Sam Worthington as a falsely accused jewel thief who climbs outside the 25th floor of a New York office building to grab attention and clear his name.
