Five Things to Know Today, Jan. 31

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Tuesday and the last day of January. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: Another beautiful day. Sunshine, with a high of about 64 degrees. The low tonight will be around 43, the National Weather Service says.

Gas prices appear to be rising still. The lowest price for a gallon of regular reported to www.georgiagasprices.com for Lilburn Monday was $3.43 (at Gulf, 127 Arcado Road at N River Drive), a penny more than Sunday's lowest price. The highest was $3.49 (at Shell, 4975 Lawrenceville Hwy at Holly Ridge Drive; the Citgo at 5355 Lawrenceville Hwy at Inland Way; and at the Citgo at 4967 Lawrenceville Hwy at Holly Ridge Drive).

Clusters. We’re used to seeing stars splashed across the sky on clear nights. Tonight is a good opportunity to see them in clustera, with a good view available of two groups that can be seen without a telescope. The Pleiades and the Hyades are both in the constellation Taurus. They’ll be visible after nightfall in the south- to-southwest quadrant of the sky, along with the Moon, Jupiter and the star Aldebaran. Quite a grouping to spend a little time with.

Speaking of the stars: A new show just started for kids at the Center for Puppetry Arts called “Space!” The center’s a quick shot down I-85 in Midtown Atlanta and worth a visit. The space program is educational but also fun, promising “cosmic special effects, non-stop action, and an eclectic musical score fit for a universe as vast and diverse as our own.” It runs through March 11.

Federalists. Maybe it was something in the air, in the years after the shock of World War II showed a need for a way to keep the global peace. While the U.S. and other nations pushed towards founding the United Nations, there was also a World Federalist movement that sought to go beyond just a loose assembly of states and create a union of all nations. Guess who called for that? Among others, the Georgia state legislature. In a resolution passed on this day in 1946, state lawmakers stated “that all peoples of the earth should now be united in a World Federation” and urged Congress and the president to work on a constitution for that body.
