Five Things to Know Today, March 16

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Friday. Here are some things to know as you head into the day and then the weekend.

The weather: Rain? Sunshine? The chances are 50-50. The high will be about 80 degrees, the National Weather Service says. The low tonight will be around 57.

Gas prices: You can get a gallon of regular for a penny less than yesterday, according to reports to www.georgiagasprices.com. Prices ranged from $3.61 (at Kroger, 4155 Lawrenceville Hwy, and at Murphy USA, 3950 Lawrenceville Hwy) to $3.69 (at Texaco, 4090 Five Forks Trickum Road, and at 13 other places).

Late: President Lincoln first abolished slavery with the Emancipation Declaration in 1863. But after the Civil War, Republicans worried that his executive order might not have staying power, and the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was proposed. The amendment banning slavery was ratified by the required number of states that year, but was rejected by some. One of those was Mississippi , which only got around to changing its mind 129 years later. Mississippi ratified the 13th Amendment on March 16, 1995, the last state to do so.

Irish Eyes: Even if you’re not Irish, you can join in celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at a slew of events this weekend. The biggest celebration in Gwinnett County is said to be the Spring Green Festival in Lawrenceville on Saturday. The family-friendly event starts in the morning with a 5K run and 1K fun run/walk, then goes all day with vendors, kids’ activities and music. The annual event takes place at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse.

A little night music: It’ll be mostly Mozart in Lilburn when the Gwinnett Choral Guild performs Saturday night at 7 p.m. They’ll be at Lilburn Christian Church with a program that includes soloists and a professional chamber orchestra. The community choir was founded in 1983 and has performed as far away as St. Petersburg, Russia .
