Five Things to Know Today, March 19

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Monday and a new week. Here are some things to know about today.

The weather: Warm! It'll be mostly sunny, the National Weather Service says, with a high near 86 degrees. The low tonight wll be about 59.

Gas prices: Big jump over the weekend. The lowest price in Lilburn for a gallon of regular reported to www.georgiagasprices.com Sunday evening was $3.67 (at Shell, 490 Pleasant Hill Road at Burns Road, and at four other places). The highest was $3.79 (at Texaco, 4785 Lawrenceville Highway at Indian Trail Lilburn Road).

Iraq. This was the day in 2003 when President George W. Bush ordered the start of the war in Iraq. I’ll leave the talk of pros and cons to others. Right now let’s use this as another opportunity to think honorably about the fallen and those who served and returned.

Prisoner: Does this TV opening dialogue ring a bell? “I am not a number; I am a free man!” Then you know the 1960s hip espionage hit “The Prisoner.” Today was the birthday of its star and sometimes writer, the late Patrick McGoohan. McGoohan sounded authentically British because he was raised in Ireland and England, but he was born in New York, in 1928. Before his Prisoner fame, he had already established his spy cred in the 1960s series “Danger Man,” which ran on US television as “Secret Agent Man” and had one of the world’s coolest fast-guitar theme scores. He also racked up a diverse and iconic filmography, with roles in memorable but very different movies including “Ice Station Zebra,” “Silver Streak” and “Scanners.” McGoohan died in January 2009.

Ready, set, sell. Just in time for spring cleaning, the city of Lilburn is holding its yard sale at the overflow parking lot at city hall on Saturday from 9 a.m., and the Gwinnett parks department is holding a big Yard and Craft Sale at the same time. The parks department sale is at Shorty Howell Park on Pleasant Hill Road north of I-85. Admission is free if you’re buying, or just window shopping. If you want to sell your stuff, it’s $20 for a vendor space. Contact for more info on that sale.
