Five Things to Know Today, March 27

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Tuesday. Here are some things to know as you head into the day.

The weather: Perfect. What, you want more? Ok: sunshine, with a high of about 76 degrees and little wind, the National Weather Service says. The low tonight will be around 52.

Gas prices: Time to look into a car pool or a bicycle. The national average reached $3.90 Monday, and the highest price reported for Lilburn on www.georgiagasprices.com jumped to $3.89 (at Texaco, 4785 Lawrenceville Hwy). The lowest was $3.71 (at QuickTrip, 4900 Stone Mountain Hwy).

Don’t touch that: Snake handling among some mainly Pentecostal Christians developed as a religious ritual in the South in the early 1900s, according to The New Georgia Encyclopedia. By the 1920s, it had spread up and down Appalachia and as far north as Michigan. Some states started passing laws in the 1940s to prohibit the handling of poisonous snakes, and Georgia was one of them. The law here followed the case of a 6-year-old girl who was bitten and died during a service in Cook County in south Georgia. Gov. Eugene Talmadge signed the law on March 27, 1941, making it a felony to possess a venomous snake in a way that would endanger others.

Art. How about a little escape into the world of great art? This week is another Half-Price Thursday Evening at the High Museum in Atlanta. That’s $9 for adults instead of $18, and inside there’s a wonderful world of painting and sculpture to take you out of this world, at least from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Malt. Here’s one you can really taste: It’s World Whisky Day, apparently for the first time ever. There’s an online list of events that claims to have at least 17,000-some followers, and a hashtag to tweet your whisky-celebrating thoughts to: #worldwhiskyday. Note the spelling without an ‘e’ is the one used in Scotland and Canada, not the ‘whiskey’ common elsewhere. It saves just that little bit of time spelling before you get to taste your first single-malt of the day. Cheers!
