Five Things to Know Today, May 3

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Thursday. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: The high will be about 84, and it'll be partly sunny. There's a 30 percent chance of rain, mainly between 5-8 p.m. The low tonight will be around 66 degrees, the National Weather Service says.

Gas prices: The highest price in Lilburn reported to www.georgiagasprices.com on Wednesday was 5 cents more than Tuesday, at $3.69 (at Texaco, 4785 Lawrenceville Hwy at Indian Trail Lilburn Rd). The lowest was 1 cent lower, $3.57 (at QuikTrip, 4785 Lawrenceville Hwy at Indian Trail Lilburn Road). AAA is not reporting a rise in prices nationwide, and www.georgiagasprices.com said they are still falling.

Read all about it: It’s World Press Freedom Day, which marks the value of free media to a democracy and the need to protect freedom of information, of the kind anchored in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The United Nations gives out a press freedom award every year named for Guillermo Cano Isaza. He was a journalist in Columbia killed for doing his job; he was gunned down in 1986 outside his newspaper’s office after his coverage angered drug lords.

I feel good: James Brown was born around this date in 1933 in South Carolina but grew up and started making music in Georgia. His father moved with him to Augusta when he was 5, and he was raised there mainly by two aunts, in a roadhouse. He went to juvenile prison at 15 for theft and formed a gospel group, then continued performing after his release at 19. He sang and played gospel and rhythm and blues around Toccoa and then Macon before he was discovered by King Records and went on to stardom. He died in Atlanta of heart failure on Dec. 25, 2006, at age 73.
