Five Things to Know Today, May 4

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Friday. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: Mostly clouds today, with a high of about 85. There's a 20 percent chance of rain, and that may come before 9 a.m. this morning, or we may have rain and thunderstorms after 2 p.m.

Gas prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com are a little lower than yesterday. The lowest price was $3.53 (at QuikTrip, 4900 Stone Mountain Hwy near Stone Drive), and the highest was $3.65 (at Citgo, 5355 Lawrenceville Hwy at Inland Way).

Welcome: You generally think of Chicago when you think of Al Capone, but he had a Georgia connection. The Prohibition gangster convicted for tax dodging arrived in Atlanta on May 4, 1932 to serve part of his 11-year term at the federal prison. He was later transferred to newly opened Alcatraz. He came back to the South to live out his last few years post-prison in Palm Island, Fla., where he died in 1947 after a stroke, pneumonia and heart failure, at age 48.

Super: On Saturday night, the moon will be both full and at its closest point to the Earth this year. That will make for a big-looking lunar orb that some call a supermoon. The closest point to Earth of the moon’s orbit is called a perigee, and the farthest point is the apogee. On Saturday, the full moon will be about 30,000 miles closer to Earth than at its apogee. Have fun watching.

There will be yard sale items, craft vendors and games and inflatables for the kids. It runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sellers can reserve a space for $20 with a table or $15 without.
