Five Things to Know Today, Nov. 17

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Thursday. Here are some things to know about the day as you head into it.

The weather: Finally, a return to real fall weather. The high today will be a lot cooler, at about 56 degrees, and it will be mostly cloudy and windy. The low tonight will be -- are you ready? -- about 29 degrees.

Gas prices: A gallon of regular is one cent lower on average in Georgia compared with Wednesday, AAA says, at $3.333. That's in line with the nationwide drop to an average of $3.402. Prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com for Lilburn in the past 24 hours ranged from $3.24 (at Shell, 4032 US Hwy 78 W at Bethany Church Rd) to $3.32 (at Shell, 612 Rockbridge Rd SW at Lilburn Stone Mountain Road).

Raiders of the lost fort. In the 1780s, at the end of the American Revolution, there was a frontier outpost in Madison County named Fort McCluskey. It's long gone, but Bruce Maney has researched who was at the fort when it existed and will talk about his work tonight at this month's general membership meeting of the Gwinnett Historical Society in Lawrenceville, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Occupy: The Anniversary. Today marks two months since Occupy Wall Street started its Manhattan camp, and more have spread around the country, all the way to places like Snellville. The New York site was shut down by the city just this week, but activists are still planning and calling for a day of action Nov. 17 in New York and elsewhere. I saw Mommy hunting Santa Claus. If your family likes Bass Pro, the stores are hosting a bunch of Christmas stuff between now and the holiday, including free photos with Santa and free crafts. There's a full schedule for the store in Lawrenceville.
