Five Things to Know Today, Nov. 21

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Monday and the official week to give thanks. Here are some things to know as you head into them.

The weather: It's foggy out there, and the sun's not likely to come out and burn it off. There's a 20 percent chance of rain, but it may be as warm as 75 degrees during the day. The low tonight will be only about 57.

Gas prices: The average for a gallon of unleaded is $3.267 in Georgia, according to AAA, and in the U.S., it's $3.351, about six cents less than a week ago. Prices reported for Lilburn to www.georgiagasprices.com in the past 24 hours ranged from $3.11 (at Exxon, 930 Indian Trail Lilburn Road NW at Dickens Road NW) to $3.35 (at Shell, 722 Harbins Road at Dickens Road NW).

Hello! For 39 years, a dedicated band of adherents has been promoting saying 'hello" as a way to encourage peaceful negotiation instead of wars around the globe. World Hello Day was created by two Americans after the Israeli-Egyptian war of 1973. The idea is to say hello to at least 10 people, to underscore the value of communication between individuals as an alternative to letting things slide into confrontation. So: Hi, how are you?

First. The first woman U.S. senator came from Georgia. Rebecca Latimer Felton served just two days in 1922. She was appointed by Georgia's then-governor to fill a gap between the death of one senator and the new term of his male successor after a special election. It was another 10 years before a woman was elected to the Senate, Arkansas' Hattie Wyatt Caraway in 1932.
