Five Things to Know Today, Nov. 3

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Thursday. Here are some things to know about today.

Your umbrella: Don't leave home without it. There's a 70 percent chance of rain, mostly in the afternoon and through the early hours of tomorrow. The high will be about 66 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The low tonight? Around 42.

Gas prices aren't going anywhere much. The average for a gallon of regular in the state is $3.353, and nationally, it's $3.432, little changed from yesterday. In Lilburn, prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com for the past 24 hours ranged from $3.24 (at Murphy USA, 3950 Lawrenceville Hwy near Lester Road) to $3.34 (at Gulf, 127 Arcado Road at N River Drive).

Yummy. What's your favorite place for a sandwich around Lilburn? Tell us as a way to celebrate National Sandwich Day. It marks the birthday of John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, in 1718. He's credited with ordering up history's first sandwich when he asked his servants to put meat between two pieces of bread so he could eat one-handed during a card game.

The final frontier (still): Big anniversaries in space exploration today. Sputnik 2 blasted off on Nov. 3, 1957, just the second human satellite to orbit the Earth and the first with a passenger, the little dog Laika (who did not survive the journey). In 1973, NASA launched Mariner 10, the first space probe to reach Mercury.

Storytime: The Gwinnett library hosts a regular series of story times for preschoolers during the day. Today it's on at the Lilburn branch, and it's Mountain Park on Friday. The library system keeps a handy calendar on the web.
