Five Things to Know Today, Oct. 11

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Tuesday, Lilburn. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: More of the wet stuff is likely, and in fact, there's an 80 percent chance, according to the National Weather Service. The high will be around 66, and the low tonight about 56 degrees.

Gas prices: The average nationwide for a gallon of regular is $3.395, a solid one-tenth of a cent lower than yesterday's. In Georgia, it's $3.245. Prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com for Lilburn in the past 24 hours ranged from $3.13 (at Kroger, 4155 Lawrenceville Hwy at Beaver Ruin Road) to $3.29 (at Shell, 5414 Five Forks Trickum Road at Rockbridge).

What's for lunch? It's National School Lunch Week, the end of a months-long campaign by the School Nutrition Association to raise kids' awareness of where food comes from and the importance of a good, healthy lunch. A question for you: How well do you think Gwinnett County is doing in providing these?

Peanuts to peace: Our southern neighbor and former president, Jimmy Carter, won the Nobel Peace Prize on this day in 2002. The award recognized Carter's decades of peace work around the world and his economic and justice efforts, including his support for Georgia-based Habitat for Humanity in the United States and abroad. Not bad for a peanut farmer.

Moon's a risin': Tonight's sky hosts the Hunters Moon. It also happens to be the time in the lunar cycle when the full moon is farthest from Earth during its elliptical orbit. Each of the next seven full moons will come closer to us before the cycle reverses again. Blink, look, can you see it coming closer? Just a little spooky, or have I got too much Halloween on my mind?
