Five Things to Know Today, Oct. 25

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Tuesday. Here are some things to know about the day.

The weather: Sunny, with a high of 76 degrees. The low tonight will be around 48, the National Weather Service says.

Gas prices are little changed from yesterday. On average, a gallon regular gas is $3.401 in Georgia and $3.451 in the U.S., according to AAA. Prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com for Lilburn in the past 24 hours ranged from $3.33 (at Murphy USA, 3950 Lawrenceville Hwy near Lester Road) to $3.43 (at Citgo, 5355 Lawrenceville Hwy at Inland Way).

That one was short. On this day in 1983, U.S. forces invaded the Caribbean island nation of Grenada, sent in by President Ronald Reagan after a coup in which the prime minister was killed and amid accusations of Cuban influence. Fighting was done by Nov. 3. The final death toll was 45 Grenadians, 24 Cubans and 19 Americans.

Extra fries. Just in time for fall weather and longer nights, Oct. 25 is National Greasy Food Day. Which is pretty much a license to break all those good-eating rules. Let's see, should we use this one-day power for good or for evil? Fried fish or deep-fried Snickers?

Up early? Fall is the best time to spot what astronomers call false dawn, or zodiacal light. It's a kind of pyramid-shaped light well before the real dawn that comes from sunlight reflecting off particles in space. Look east when you're out a bit in the nearby countryside, where the big city lights won't overwhelm it.
