Five Things to Know Today, Oct. 31

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Boo! Welcome to Halloween, the last day of October and the last week of daylight savings time. Here are some things to know about this Monday.

The weather: Frost is in the forecast for early morning, and the high today will be about 66 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The low tonight will be around 38 degrees.

Gas prices are holding steady. The average for a gallon of regular in Georgia is $3.37, and in the U.S. it's $3.446. Prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com for the past 24 hours ranged from $3.27 (at Quiktrip, 4900 Stone Mountain Hwy near Stone Drive) to $3.39 (at Gulf, 127 Arcado Road at North River Drive).

What's in that basket? If you have kids, chances are you'll be picking through trick-or-treat loot soon. Can you guess what the top five best-selling Halloween treats are? One tip: There is no fruit involved.

Ghost star:
The star Arcturus mimics the summer sun just as fall deepens toward winter. Around Halloween, it sets a couple hours after the autumn sun and rises about two hours before sunrise, in the same spots on the eastern and western horizon as the August sun would. Spooky.

Big words. It's a landmark anniversary for any denomination that grew out of the Protestant split from the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century: This was the day in 1517 when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church in the German city of Wittenberg. The document was a challenge to what reformers saw as abuses by the Catholic clergy and helped drive the split of new denominations from Catholicism in what was called the Protestant Reformation. Luther survived the ensuing violence and unrest across Europe and died in 1562 after a stroke, the culmination of many years of worsening health.

Reminder: The deadline to enter -- with a chance to win a trip to meet Heidi Klum and $1,031 for your favorite charity -- is at 9 p.m. tonight.
