Five Things to Know Today, Oct. 6

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Thursday. Here are some things to know about the day.

The weather: The thermometer may top 80 again today, but just barely, according to the National Weather Service. The high will be about 81, with a low tonight of 51.

Gas prices: The U.S. average for a gallon of regular is $3.399, with prices still inching downward, according to AAA. In Georgia, the average is $3.252. Prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com for Lilburn in the past 24 hours ranged from $3.16 (at Kroger, 3050 Five Forks Trickum Road near Oak Road) to $3.23, (at Citgo, 4967 Lawrenceville Highwat at Holly Ridge Drive).

Fall Into The Arts is the Gwinnett Public Library series that includes a reading and book signing tonight by the Pulitzer Prize winning author of "The Emperor of All Maladies," a history and study of cancer. Mukherjee is the author of one of the "10 Best Books of 2010," according to the New York Times. It chronicles the history of cancer, the advancement of diagnoses, and recent developments around the disease. The event is free at the the Gwinnett Center, Tommy P. Hughes Grand Ballroom, 7 p.m.

Noodlin' around: On the lesser-known holiday list, Oct. 6 is Natonal Noodle Day, which seems a bit rich, given it's also National Pasta Month. Guess we know what's for supper.

So thaaaat's the reason: Lore has it that on this day in 1945, the owner of the Billy Goat Tavern (the Chicago pub parodied on SNL in the "cheeseburger, cheeseburger" skits) put a curse on the Chicago Cubs after he was asked to leave a World Series game against the Detroit Tigers because his pet goat was eating other fans' hotdogs. Or maybe it isn't the reason. The Cubs haven't won the World Series since 1908.
