Five Things to Know Today, Oct. 7

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Friday and the beginning of another glorious weekend of fall festivals. Here are some things to know today.

The weather: Sunny, with a high of about 79 degrees. The low tonight will be around 52. Should be perfect for Friday night football games.

Gas prices: Not much has changed since yesterday. The average price nationwide for a gallon of regular is $3.992, and in Georgia it's a cent lower than yesterday at $3.240. Prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com for Lilburn in the past 24 hours ranged from $3.13 (at Kroger, 4155 Lawrenceville Highway at Beaver Ruin Road) to $3.19 (at Shell, 5474 Lawrenceville Highway at Rockbridge Road).

Lilburn Daze. It's almost time! The annual fall fest of arts & crafts, food, children's fun and neighbors runs Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m in Hay rides, inflatables, a bake sale, a petting zoo and even an author's corner are all part of the family-friendly event brought to us by the Lilburn Women's Club and the city. It's free, and there are shuttle buses all day from free parking at  on Main Street and Market Place Shopping Center on Lawrenceville Highway. Be on the lookout for Patch, and be sure and say hello and introduce yourself.

Closed for Christopher. A reminder, if you have kids in Gwinnett schools or business at a government office: They're closed Monday for Columbus Day, commemorating the 1492 landing of the explorer who gets credit for opening the door for European colonization of the Americas. That's nearly 500 years after Viking ships, possibly led by Leif Ericson, are generally believed to have reached the shore of what's now Canada. But I digress, and they didn't leave a permanent settlement.

Everybody get loose: Filmed in part next door in Stone Mountain Villlage, the remake of the 1980s hit Footloose opens in theaters today. Other new movie releases include the election cycle political thriller The Ides of March, with George Clooney and Ryan Gosling (check Lilburn-Mountain Park Patch at lunchtime for Brett Martin's video review), and Real Steel, a science fiction-slash-boxing drama (yes, really).

Have a safe and relaxing weekend, Lilburn.
