Five Things to Know Today, Sept. 12

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Monday and a new week. Here are a few things to know as you head into both of them.

The weather: Sunny, with a high of 86, the National Weather Service says. There's no chance of rain before Wednesday, and then it's only 20 percent. The low tonight will be about 59 degrees.

Gas prices: The national average hasn't budged since the last time we looked: $3.655 for a gallon of regular, and it's less than a cent lower on average in Georgia, at $3.547, according to AAA. In Lilburn, prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com over the past 24 hours ranged from $3.43 (at Kroger, 4155 Hwy 29 at Beaver Ruin) and $3.56 (at Chevron, 4784 Hwy 29 at Killian Hill).

City matters: Lilburn City Council meets tonight, with an update to the zoning ordinance on the agenda. Check Patch later for more details.

Harvest moon: It's here as of today, and can be seen for the next few days. Why's it called harvest moon? Because it's low in the sky for the next few days, providing farmers with extra light to get in the last of the crops before fall starts in earnest.

Today in history: Michael Chang and Stefan Edberg set a record in 1992 for the longest tennis match in U.S. Open history: Five hours and 26 minutes, with Edberg winning. On a more serious note, an agreement to allow East and West Germany to reunite was signed by the U.S., England, France, the Soviet Union and the two Germanies on this day in 1990. Reunification of German areas separated since after WWII took place on Oct. 3 of that year.
