Five Things to Know Today, Sept. 2

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Friday, the last work day for some of us before a long holiday weekend. Here are some things to know as you head into the day.

The weather: Well, the thermometer may creep a little higher today, up to 93 degrees, but otherwise there's not much change from previous days. There's a code orange smog alert in affect. The low tonight will be about 69 degrees.

What's new and what's part II: You know summer is coming to an end when new titles at the box office turn serious and heavy. There are two movies with Nazi themes -- "Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life" and "The Debt" (Check Patch later today for a video review of this one). But there's also some that still have a summer-movie tinge: "Shark Night 3D," for example.Click here for a list and mini reviews of all movies released today.

Get your dose of vitamins B and C (business and connections): Gwinnett County has more business networking opportunities than you can shake a chicken lunch at, including a monthly breakfast in Lilburn. The Lilburn Business Association Business Builders Breakfast is this morning from 8 to 9:30. The listing is one of very many for the county at http://www.gwinnettnetwork.com/weeklyevents.htm#Friday.

Gas prices: The price of a gallon of regular gas inched up just a tad on average in the U.S., to $3.629, according to AAA. In Georgia, it's up to $3.571. Prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com for Lilburn in the past 24 hours ranged from $3.49 (at Kroger, 3050 Five Forks Trickum Road) to $3.69 (at Texaco, 4785 Lawrenceville Hwy).

Bang, then surrender: On this day in 1864, Union troops rode in and took possession of Atlanta. In the hours before dawn, the last Confederate forces blew up their ammunition train to keep it from Union hands, then slipped away at dawn. Ilustrations from the time and excerpts of soldiers' journals and letters on both side are the well organized on the website This Week In Georgia Civil War History, run by the state university system.

Have a safe and relaxing Labor Day weekend, Lilburn. Five Things will be back on Tuesday.
