Five Things to Know Today, Sept. 29

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Welcome to Thursday.

The weather: Sunny, with a high of about 84 degrees. The low tonight will be around 60 degrees.

Gas prices: Prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com for the past 24 hours ranged from $3.21 (at Shell, 3020 Five Forks Trickum Road at Oak Road) and $3.29 (at Gulf, 27 Arcado Road at N River Drive).

Knight, queen, fun: Among the many great activities offered by our county parks department is Chess Club every Thursday evening, a short drive across I-85 at the Pinckneyville Park Community Recreation Center. All skill levels are invited to join the ancient game of kings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Check the listings at Pinckneyville Park or call 770 417 2200.

Remember this? Starting on Sept. 29, 1982, sIx people in Chicago died from Tylenol that turned out to have been poisoned with cyanide. The culprit was never caught, but the scare led to those tamper-proof tops we still grumble about today. More at History.com.

Galaxy hopping: It'll be a good night to skywatch for less bright targets, because what little moon there is will set early. EarthSky.org has tips for following star pointers to see the galaxy Andromeda, with your eyes or binoculars. Deep space -- cool!

Don't forget to check back with Lilburn-Mountain Park Patch later today for another entry in the Meet the Candidates series, the weekend planner - chock full of events - an Inside the Police Report item, and of course Pigskin Picks (can Georgia get another SEC win?) and more.
