Five Things to Know Today, Sept. 6

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday -- free breakfasts, honoring fallen heroes and a murder intrigue.

Welcome back from holiday land. It's Tuesday already, September 6, and time to put away those white shoes. There's a lot going on in Lilburn, and here are just a few things to know about today.

The weather: Rinse and repeat. The chance of rain is 40 percent, and we may have some thunderstorms. The high will be about 73 and the low tonight - are you sitting down? - a brisk 59 degrees.

Honor Fallen Heroes: Every day, our police officers put their lives at risk, and too often they answer the last call. You can honor their service and sacrifice today by giving blood at the DeKalb County Police Department’s Fallen Heroes Memorial Blood Drive at the DeKalb County Fire Headquarters’ Peer Auditorium between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Presenting blood donors get a commemorative T-shirt and will be entered into a drawing to win a pair of round trip domestic Delta Air Lines tickets and a $500 gift card. To schedule an appointment for this blood drive, visit redcrossblood.org and enter the sponsor code “dekalbpolice or call 1-800-RED CROSS (733-2767).

Gas prices: The average price for a gallon of regular gas is $3.662 in the U.S., and in Georgia it's $3.581. Gas prices reported to www.georgiagasprices.com in the past 24 hours ranged from $3.48 (at Marathon, 505 Pleasant Hill Road at Burns Road) and $3.59 at Shell (at 612 Rockbridge Road SW at Lilburn Stone Mountain Road.)

So, if there's no such thing as a free lunch, how about a free breakfast? From September 6 - 10, participating Chick-fil-A restaurants are giving away a variety of free breakfast entrees to customers who make a reservation at http://www.chick-fil-aforbreakfast.com. Click the link to reserve yours. This is not a coupon, so make sure to make a reservation through the online process in order to receive a free breakfast entree. Chick-Fil-A Lilburn is participating, as is Chick-Fil-A in Tucker.

Today in history: Anarchist Leon Czolgosz shot President William McKinley 110 years ago today at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. Most people probably think of the Alaskan mountain that used to be named after the assassinated president (now Mount Denali) when they think of McKinley, but he held office at a time when America was well on its way to becoming a global powerhouse, with all the tension that goes with the transition from agrarian to industrial society. If you're interested in learning more or just enjoying a good historical read, The President and the Assassin by my friend Scott Miller examines the era and the parallel lives of McKinley and Czolgosz that led up to the shooting.
