Today in history: The U.S. Government got the nickname Uncle Sam on this day in 1813, an aftereffect of the War of 1812. The moniker came from the "U.S." stamped on barrels of beef for American soldiers by a New York butcher. The troops started joking that the food came from Uncle Sam, a newspaper picked up on it and the rest is here at History.com.
