Today in history: In 1869, the Prohibition Party was founded, part of the temperance movement against the sale and consumption of alcohol. Fifty years later, in 1919, the 18th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed, banning the production, import, export, sale and transportation of alcohol. The party still exists, and in the 2008 presidential elections, its presidential candidate, Gene Amondson, got 643 votes.
