Great Escape: End of Summer Splash

Beat the heat with an adult whitewater rafting trip down the Chattooga.

Kids are getting back into school and now it’s time for your vacation.  With the temperatures so high, you need to head to the mountains to cool off. I think a little Chattooga whitewater rafting fits the bill.

This is a great overnight and day trip.  You can get to beautiful Tallulah Gorge State Park to rest in under two hours.  Then early in the morning, you head out for an all day adventure just east of Clayton, Ga.

Whitewater rafting is a great way to stay cool during these last dog days of summer. Although you stay in a raft with a skilled guide, you will still get wet. With a beautiful rolling mountains range to wind through, you will find yourself both relaxed and exhilarated.

Many summer packages are available through September from rafting
outfitters like Natahalla Outdoor Center. Prices range from $80 to $100 for a full day trip. You can choose from lower level Class 2/3 rapids or raft the more intense Section IV. Full package details, photos and pricing can be found on their website.

To make the trip a little more relaxing, plan to spend the night nearby before rafting out in the morning. If you have a pop-up camper or lots of camping gear, you can easily camp near the Gorge. If you have more play money, consider the Beechwood Inn Bed and Breakfast in Clayton. Dining and wines make this a perfect resting spot.

If you are traveling conservative, try the Holiday Inn Express in Dillard. The town’s charm, shopping and dining options make up for any amenities that the hotel may lack.

Don’t let the summer end without one more youthful adventure just for you. A little trip downriver might just get you ready for a busy Fall schedule.
