Holiday Spotlight: Gwinnett Habitat for Humanity

The holidays are a good time to remember local charities that may need your help. Today we spotlight Gwinnett Habitat for Humanity.

Gwinnett Habitat for Humanity serves families all over the county, including Lilburn.

The Christian-based organization works to build and renovate homes, so that all families can have a place to call home, and so "every person can experience God's love and can live and grow into all that God intends," according to the website.

In order to provide the affordable housing, Gwinnett Habitat for Humanity seeks donations and partners with sponsors to build homes in local communities. Once homeowners are approved, they also participate in the building.

A home build usually takes place on 10-12 consecutive Saturdays, with teams of approximately 20-25 volunteers working each Saturday, according to the website. Closing documents are then completed, and new homeowners are able to move in.

Each homeowner makes monthly mortgage payments (usually between $500 and $700) to the nonprofit, and those funds are funneled back into building more homes.

Gwinnett Habitat for Humanity is part of the global effort of Habitat for Humanity International, which is headquarted in Americus, Ga.
