Pet Spotlight: Flea Season is Among Us

Now is the time to get started before your house is filled with unwanted guests.

Fleas are the most common external parasite of companion animals.

Flea allergy dermatitis is one the most common skin diseases affecting dogs and cats. Flea control has always been a challenge for veterinarians and pet owners, because the adult fleas cause the clinical signs, yet the majority of the flea population (eggs, larvae and pupae) are to be found off the pet in and around the home.

The ideal flea control program utilizes products that target the various stages of the flea life cycle, not only the adult fleas on the pet. Some of the products that the suggests using are Frontline Plus for dogs, or for cats, Revolution.

The flea lays its eggs on the fur of the host. They fall off and can lay dormant for months. It is through warmth and vibration that the eggs become ready to hatch. They can live for days without a host. The entire life cycle of the flea is usually 16 days. It is through rapid egg production that the flea continues the life cycle, which is what can lead in an infestation when not properly addressed.

Frequent vacuuming and disposal of the vacuum cleaner bags can help with the problem. But when things get out of hand it is best to call in the professionals to help.

April is "Adopt a Greyhound" Month

Adopt a Greyhound Atlanta, Inc., is Atlanta’s oldest greyhound rescue group. It is a not-for profit organization committed to providing food, shelter, and TLC to retired racing greyhounds, plus other sight hounds in need, and promoting their adoption as loving and loyal companions.

The ex-racers come from those area states that offer greyhound racing. Once entering the program, a greyhound either finds a ”forever“ home or lives with volunteers for the duration of his/her life.
